Make lips look fuller and plumper with microneedling

Treat lips with microneedling: If it is already difficult to imagine that microneedling involves pricking tiny holes in the skin of the facewith a dermaroller or dermapen, the idea of treating the lips with microneedling takes this to an unimaginable level.
And this despite all the doubts as to whether the lips really look fuller, plumper and fresher after a microneedling treatment.
As an alternative to microneedling treatment of the lips, there is still the option of injecting the lips with hyaluronic acid or another filler.
However, the idea that a needle is inserted into the lips several times does not really make things any better.
In addition, many people are very afraid that the result will look unnatural after the injection - and rightly so.
So much for now - you don't need to be afraid of microneedling your lips, because it's less painful than you think.
But there are a few things to bear in mind if you want your lip microneedling treatment to be a success.
What you need to pay attention to in order to successfully treat lips with microneedling
During a microneedling treatment of the lips, the perioral wrinkles, which occur mainly above the lips, are usually also treated. As a rule, the entire area around the mouth is microneedled.
Before you start, however, as with any microneedling treatment, it is important to prepare not only all products, but of course also your facial skin and especially your lips.
Needling lips with Dermaroller or Dermapen?
Before the treatment, you need to decide whether you want to usea dermaroller or a dermapen.
If you absolutely want to use a dermaroller, we recommend starting with a needle length of 0.5 mm.
If you don't experience any pain, you can increase to 0.75 mm.
However, if you have already read some of the articles on our site, you will know that we recommend using a Dermapen instead of a Dermaroller.
The Dermapen has many advantages over a dermaroller, but we won't go into them here.
Which needle head is the right one for the Dermapen?
If, as we hope, you have decided in favour of a Dermapen, you are now faced with the question of which needle head to use.
The needle head with 12 needles, with 36 needles or perhaps the special lip nano needle head?
To make this decision, it is important to familiarise yourself once again with the principle of action of microneedling, which consists of two modes of action.
- Self-healing powers after deliberately damaging the skin with needles
- Delivery of active ingredients via the puncture channels created by needles
Lip nano-needle head
This means that the results with a lip nano-needle head cannot be optimal because, contrary to what the name suggests, a lip nano-needle head does not have needles, but only a kind of stamp pad with slight elevations.
This means that no puncture channels are created to stimulate the skin's self-healing powers and therefore no active ingredients can penetrate the skin via the puncture channels.
The lip nano-needle head is used to "tap" active ingredients into the skin and for people who are very afraid of needles or are extremely sensitive to pain.
12 needle head
You need to know that the 12-gauge needle head is the most invasive. This means that the injuries caused by the 12 mm needle head are more severe than those caused by the 36 mm needle head.
Now you might think: That's great, that's exactly what I want. But you have to remember that the needle head should always match the area of skin being treated.
And, as you probably know from other places, the lips are a very sensitive area of skin. Therefore, our recommendation for microneedling the lips is the
36 needle head
The 36 needle head creates puncture channels and with them the desired injury to the skin.
However, the stitches are less invasive and therefore less painful than with the needle head with 12 needles.
The needle head with 36 needles is ideal for treating the lips and other sensitive skin areas such as the eye contour.
Now that we have clarified which needle head we recommend, back to the preparation of the lips and mouth area.
Preparing the lips and mouth area for microneedling
Cleansing
Firstly, you need to remove any lipstick from your lips and any make-up residue from the skin around your mouth.
The subsequent cleansing routine is actually always the same:
- Cleanse the facial skin with a cleansing milk
- Cleanse the facial skin with a cleansing cream
- Soothe and cleanse the facial skin with a micellar water
You can find cleansing milk, cleansing cream and micellar water in the facial cleanser section.
Exfoliation
A fruit acid peel is recommended after the cleansing routine. However, this does not apply to the lips.
Fruit acids should not come into contact with mucous membranes under any circumstances.
However, there are also special lip scrubs that do not use fruit acids, such as the Hyalu Lip Scrub from Utsukusy Cosmetics.
The Hyalu lip scrub works both on the basis of an enzyme and with mechanical abrasive particles. A papaya extract with a high papain (enzyme) content is used for this. The abrasive particles are obtained from olive stones.
The lip scrub is massaged into the lips using circular movements. It is then left on for 6 to 8 minutes and the residue is removed with water.
Microneedling of the lips and mouth area
Microneedling always raises the question of the right microneedling serum, which is of course also the case with microneedling of the lips.
To make lips look fuller and plumper with microneedling, the use of cross-linked hyaluronic acid is often recommended, as this is somewhat more stable.
This means it is broken down more slowly by the body. But as so often in life, where there is an advantage, there is also a disadvantage.
In the case of cross-linked hyaluronic acid, this is that the molecules are somewhat larger than those of non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid and therefore penetrate the skin somewhat more difficultly.
We therefore recommend alternating between cross-linked and non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid, as the non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid provides a faster freshness boost.

Microneedling lips - Stitch depth of the dermapen
It is best to start with the facial skin or the mouth area first.
Once you have sufficiently treated the wrinkles around the mouth, work your way to the lips, but don't forget to change the depth of the dermapen.
Many Dermapens start at a stitch depth of 0.25 mm. We also recommend that you start with this stitch depth after you have applied the microneedling serum to your lips.
If you tolerate the stitch depth of 0.25 mm well, you can gradually increase it.
However, it is not necessary to sting so deeply that the pain is almost unbearable or it starts to bleed heavily.
However, if you think you can only achieve your goal with the right depth and intensity of needling, buy an anaesthetic cream from the pharmacy beforehand.
When you have finished needling, remove the remains of the serum.
Lip mask - ideal after microneedling
Now it's time to soothe and pamper your lips, which have been stressed by the microneedling treatment.
Use a special lip mask such as the LIPS VEIL (lip mask) from Utsukusy. Simply apply this lip mask to your lips and leave it on for 6 to 8 minutes.
Thanks to its active ingredients (hyaluronic acid and linefill from sesame seeds), this lip mask acts as a booster on the one hand and soothes and nourishes your lips on the other.
Finally, sun protection and lip balm
As usual after microneedling, you should protect your skin from the sun.
Use a sun cream with sun protection factor 50 and a good lip balm for your lips.
We advise you never to leave the house without sun protection during and after your microneedling treatment.
How often should you treat your lips and mouth area with microneedling?
You will see a change after the first application, but unfortunately one microneedling treatment is not enough.
To make your lips look really beautiful with microneedling, you should plan around 6 treatments.
You should not treat your lips more than once a week.
We advise you to repeat the treatment every 10 to 14 days.
However, the result does not only depend on the number of treatments, but also on many other factors such as the depth of the stitch or the type of needle head used.
We wish you every success!
